Microsoft’s 8 October announcement puts sales prospecting on the list of processes it wants agents to carry forward autonomously. Sales Development Agent is available in public preview. Microsoft says it can research prospects, prepare outreach, maintain follow-up conversations and pass qualified opportunities to sellers.
What the agent does
According to Microsoft, the agent is managed in Teams, sends messages using its own Exchange account and connects to CRM platforms. It can continue working on earlier-stage prospects before passing them to a salesperson when buying signals appear.
The release is part of a broader sales and service announcement. Availability differs between products: the new Service Agent experience is in private preview for selected Frontier customers. It should not be treated as generally available.
Availability and cost
Sales Development Agent is in public preview and will begin consuming Copilot credits on 16 November 2026, Microsoft says. The announcement does not provide a complete cost estimate for an individual sales workflow.
Our assessment
A useful pilot would measure more than the number of messages sent. Track whether outreach reaches suitable prospects, whether replies are handled correctly and whether sellers accept the resulting opportunities.
Before a pilot, document who owns the agent’s mailbox, which customer records it can access and when a conversation must move to a person. Start with a small approved contact list and inspect the first conversations in full. Those are our suggested evaluation steps, not results from testing this release.
